Ranjanie with her daughter
Based in Colombo, Ranjanie creates abstract expressionist art that brings together minimalism and vibrant colours. Her journey with art has deep family roots — her father was both a writer and artist, while her mother was known for her arts and crafts work.
Ranjanie discovered her passion for painting while working alongside her daughter after her father's passing. What began as a way to process grief has grown into something that brings her daily joy. Her work has been exhibited at the Lionel Wendt Gallery, where she's shared her experiments with colour and floral effects.
For Ranjanie, painting is meditation. She loses herself in the process, never quite knowing how colours will blend or what patterns will emerge — much like life itself. When a piece doesn't work out, she simply washes it away and starts fresh. There's always something new to try, another technique to explore.
Her old teacher once said "a minute lost is lost forever," and those words stuck with her. That's why she makes the most of every moment, whether she's painting or simply observing the world around her. If she's not at her easel, she's thinking about her next piece or experimenting with new ideas.
Art isn't just a hobby for Ranjanie — it's who she is. Each day brings new possibilities to create, and she finds joy in every moment she gets to spend with brush in hand.
